On Sunday, October 11, over 30 Oklahomans joined more than 200,000 and marched on Washington with one simple, uncompromising demand: Equal protection for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states.
Movement leaders like Cleve Jones inspired us with a call to action to go home and build the movement to demand equality from the ground up, in all 435 Congressional Districts:
“A free and equal people do not tolerate prioritization of their rights. They do not accept compromises. They do not accept delays. And when we see leaders and those who represent us saying ‘you must wait again,’ we say No! No! No longer will we wait!”
It was a historic event and TU law student Amy Gioletti said it best “our elected officials from Oklahoma are not representing us, so we came to Washington DC to represent ourselves.” The Oklahoma delegation marched and waved the State flag and even sang O
K L A H O M A Oklahoma!! in front of the White House. On a bright clear Sunday morning as Equality Marchers gathered in the streets to begin the march, a rainbow appeared in the sky. The crowd was energized and roared with pride as they marched to the U.S. Capital for a rally that lasted 5 hours.
