Camp Fire Teens in Action
Oklahomans for Equality is excited to announce a new partnership with Camp Fire USA Green Country Council for a Teens in Action service learning group. This group — created to empower young people to identify and address social issues in their community — is open to all high school-age teens, but especially designed for LGBT teens, youth from LGBT families, and their friends and allies. We offer a safe and inclusive environment, allowing teens to play an instrumental role in choosing and addressing issues that are important to them. What is Teens In Action?
Teens who join Teens In Action complete special projects together during the school year. Service learning is different from community service because teens get to choose and plan projects themselves, and when finished reflect and celebrate the results. Service Learning:
- Enhances development in areas such as self-esteem, moral reasoning, social skills, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and concern for others and society.
- Adds a sense of being valued by showing you can make a difference.
- Increases engagement in your education and community.
- Empowers teens to become active citizens by helping you discover issues you are passionate about and ability to act on them. This in turn can positively affect the community's view of youth in the area.
- Teaches leadership skills as you take responsibility for designing and implementing service projects.
- Encourages positive lifestyle choices. Youth who serve are less likely than those who don't to get involved in many different risky behaviors, including drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, vandalism, and school truancy.
