Five Center Cinema Movies in May 2008
The Friday night movies in May are intended to get us ready for the 2008 Pride Celebration. They will be a look at the lives of our community in the world around us now and in years past.

Incest, drug trafficking, bestiality and an egg fetish are merely the tip of the proverbial iceberg in this ultra-black comedy from renegade filmmaker John Waters. With the title of "Filthiest Person Alive" at stake, Babs Johnson (Divine), her degenerate son and dim-bulb mother face stiff competition from the vile Marble clan (David Lochary and Mink Stole) in an unbridled assault on every taboo in the book. In this intense drama, Margaret (Tilda Swinton), a mother of three, is concerned about her oldest son, 17-year-old Beau (Jonathan Tucker), who's been keeping company with a gay 30-year-old gambler named Darby. Magazine editor Syd (Radha Mitchell) is stuck in a dreary relationship with her current boyfriend, James (Gabriel Mann). One day, while looking into a ceiling leak at her apartment building, Syd enters the apartment of her neighbor Lucy (Ally Sheedy), whose live-in actress girlfriend, Greta (Patricia Clarkson), is struggling with a drug addiction. Directed by midnight-movie legend John Waters, this campy, twisted follow-up to Pink Flamingos isn't for the squeamish. Cult icon Divine stars as spoiled teen Dawn Davenport, who leaves home when her parents refuse to buy her the one Christmas gift she covets: cha-cha heels. After a sexual encounter with a sleazy derelict (also played by Divine), Dawn turns up pregnant and soon becomes a career criminal with a taste for murder.March 14: COFFEE DATE (2006)

When Todd (Jonathan Bray) shows up at a coffee shop to meet his blind date, Kelly, he's shocked to discover that she is actually a he (Wilson Cruz). As the lukewarm coals of their long-term relationships fade, they ignite passion in their lives by finding comfort in each other.March 28: BOYFRIENDS (1996)

Paul, Matt, and Will (in their 30s) have been friends for years. They converge at the seaside for the weekend, each with a boyfriend in tow. Paul is with Ben, his companion of five years: their relationship is on the rocks after months of Paul's moodiness since his brother Mark died. Matt brings Owen, whom he's dated for three months and wants to live with; to everyone else, they seem singularly incompatible. Will brings Adam, a 20-year old one-night stand, to meet "happy, well-adjusted homosexuals." Special Center CinemaTwo sheepherders -- Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar (Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger) -- meet and fall in love while working together near Wyoming's Brokeback Mountain in 1963. Over the next 20 years, their lives take different courses: Jack becomes a rodeo cowboy while Ennis remains a ranch hand. Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid and Michelle Williams co-star. Ang Lee directs screenwriter Larry McMurtry's adaptation of a short story by E. Annie Proulx.

Through interviews with a host of gay and lesbian producers, directors and actors -- including John Waters, Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant and more -- directors Lisa Ades and Lesli Klainberg explore the roots of queer cinema. Along the way, this thoughtful documentary examines the cultural, political and social influences that have shaped the way stories depicting gay life have found their way into films over the last 50 years.
May 9: Small Town Gay Bar (2006)

Despite the collective outings of Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, Rosie O'Donnell and Olympic diver Greg Louganis, homophobia is alive and well -- especially in the small towns of the Deep South. Focusing on the day-to-day struggles of two Mississippi gay bars and the grateful patrons who often travel hundreds of miles to find them, filmmaker Malcolm Ingram reveals a surprisingly close community that treats its residents like family members.
May 16: One Nation Under God (1993)

This documentary explores the humorous techniques -- including theory from psychiatry and religion -- proposed to "cure" homosexuals. Through interviews and footage from the annals, the argument is made that homosexuality is nothing short of an affliction that can be treated. "Former" lesbian women are featured getting beauty tips, while "former" gay men take to the football fields to prove their masculinity.
Life was very different before the 1969 Stonewall riots put the issue of gay rights front and center in America. Using archival films and interviews with gays and lesbians who were forced to hide their sexuality for fear of reprisals, this documentary by Robert Rosenberg, Greta Schiller and John Scagliotti sheds light on American gay life from the 1920s to the 1960s and the socio political climate that finally led to profound change.

Melissa Etheridge narrates this documentary that explores the progress and challenges of the post-Stonewall lesbian/gay rights movement through archival footage and interviews with leaders such as Barbara Gittings, Armistead Maupin, Jewelle Gomez and Dorothy Allison. The film chronicles key events from 1970 to the end of the 20th century, including sexual liberation, conflicts with the feminist movement, AIDS and political organization
