I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and the Clinical Director for Children’s Services for a large community mental health agency in eastern Oklahoma. My husband Dewan and I have been married for almost 17 years and we have an amazing 14 year old son. We are members of Fellowship Congregational United Church of Christ where I serve on the leadership development committee. I am very passionate about helping to change the trajectory of all of social inadequacies and Oklahomans for Equality offers the perfect vehicle to reach as many people as possible to help change our environment so that it is supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community because love is love.
I am passionate about this work because all deserve “Life Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. The LBGTQIA+ community is engaged in a civil rights movement and with that comes monumental systemic change. I believe in order to accomplish systematic change it takes people from all walks of life, including those of us who identify as straight allies because we are better together. I started volunteering weekly at the front desk of the Dennis R. Neil Equality Center in November. In addition, I have recently become involved with the Openarms Youth Project. Throughout my 20+ year career in behavioral health, I have championed causes centered on children, youth, and families. My calling includes a deep passion concerning the emotional and mental wellness for youth who identify as LGBTQIA+. I want to create and help support programs that address the community’s disparity of having poorer health and mental health outcomes specifically with depression and anxiety which contributes to higher risks of substance use and tobacco use. In addition, I would like to address higher rates of school absences due to bullying. Most importantly, I would like to address safety for the community because sexual assault, physical assault, and suicide attempts/completions have a higher prevalence with the LGBTQIA+ population than the general population. I feel that I have the tools to help further the vision and values that OKEQ demonstrates by working on behalf of this amazing organization and the people it helps and represents.
