Investing in People
Through Love
and Life Skills

Dads Hug Too is now an affiliate program of Oklahomans for Equality (OKEQ), serving LGBTQ+ Oklahomans and their allies since 1980.

Dads Hug Too (DHT) is a grassroots organization that envisions doing what all dads should do: emotionally supporting and teaching LGBTQ+ people the skills needed to succeed in life. The volunteers of DHT are dedicated to investing in the lives of LGBTQ+ youth and adults, and empowering them with knowledge and resources to help them gain confidence, self-sufficiency and safety.

About Dads Hug Too
Dads Hug Too (DHT) envisions doing what all dads should do: emotionally supporting and teaching LGBTQ+ people the skills needed to succeed in life. The volunteers of DHT are dedicated to investing in the lives of LGBTQ+ youth and adults, empowering them with knowledge and resources to help them gain confidence, self-sufficiency and safety.  Often biological parents or caretakers disengage when their LGBTQ+ children choose to live authentically, which erases the traditional passing on of life skills, experiences and knowledge. We want to stand in the gap by providing a positive role model structure.

The first step is providing emotional support in the form of consensual hugs or high fives. For many LGBTQ+ community members, this is the first physical contact they have had from a parental figure since coming out, sometimes months or even years before. The second step for DHT is imparting knowledge by teaching LGBTQ+ people various life skills: auto maintenance, home repair, job interviewing, cooking, grooming, tax preparation, self-defense and more. We also want to instill service to others and pride in ownership by partnering with them on service projects within their community. We plan to work with area supportive businesses and organizations and help to connect LGBTQ+ people with local safe places and resources.

Dads Hug Too is now an affiliate program of Oklahomans for Equality (OKEQ), serving LGBTQ+ Oklahomans and their allies since 1980.
